Reuse of PC plastic aggregates in cementitious materials
The main objective of this study is the investigation of the potential use of polycarbonate (PC) waste in cementitious matrix, as partial replacement of natural aggregates in mortars composites containing different amounts of PC particles (3%, 10%, 20% and 50%) as partial replacement of sand are characterised by destructive and non-destructive testing. Firstly, various physical properties including fresh and dry density, water absorption, porosity and apparent gas permeability are measured. Secondly, mechanical properties including compressive strength, elastic modulus, flexural strength and toughness indices are investigated. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) is used for the analysis of the matrix-plastic aggregate bonding. The main results of this study show the feasibility of the beneficial use of polycarbonate materials as partial volume substitutes for natural aggregates in cementitious materials. These new composites offer a low specific gravity and a significant improvement of the post-peak flexural behaviour. Moreover, they would help in resolving some of the solid waste problems created by plastics production.
