Open and closed water pipelines. Transportation
In a so-called open system the medium is pumped section by section from one reservoir to the next with a long distance in between. The long distances are bridged by a multitude of reservoirs and pumping stations. So, in fact, the system consists of a series of individual systems which are not directly linked to each other hydraulically. Closed water pipelines are very much the state of the art in the field of pipeline engineering. As they do not require intermediate tanks or the water treatment facilities associated with open systems, they are cheaper to build and their lifecycle costs are lower. The only drawbacks are that they require more elaborate surge control and telecontrol equipment. However, using information and technologies that are currently available, these issues can be solved and the advantages of closed systems are then seen to outweigh these drawbacks.
