Fires and Explosions: Combustibility analysis of metals
A finely divided (participate) metal dispersed in air can produce a combustion explosion in which the metal is the fuel and the air is the oxidizer. This is a significant issue because many industrial operations produce finely divided metallic particulates. These include sawing, lathe operations, milling, grinding, and polishing. Other processes deliberately produce finely divided metal particles for products such as pyrotechnics, structural parts, solder pastes, propellants, and explosives. This article covers the hazards associated with the combustibility of fine metal powders.
