High clarity low gloss waterborne lacquers for wood
Conventional micronised synthetic silica products can be used for matting water-borne coatings. However, some issues with respect to optical properties of clear coatings exist, especially when dealing with 1-pack systems. As shown in this study, these problems appear mainly to arise from particle dispersion, agglomeration and integration issues. These deficiencies can be avoided by appropriate use of silane compounds in the coating formulation. Such additives are presumed to function by promoting the distribution of the individual silica particles, keeping them well dispersed and integrated in the dry film matrix. Such a well-ordered film structure will help to provide the homogeneous state required to ensure high film clarity.
