Three dimensional road surface model from laser scanning
The paper aims at creating a 3D CAD model of an existing road surface built for vehicle testing. The road surface here has several different kinds of deviation features intended to test the vehicle for its stability and durability. An innovative laser scanning system with the help of two laser measurement sensors has been designed and built for this purpose. The two laser scanners, scan in two mutually perpendicular planes XZ and YZ. This data is recorded and converted to 3D point cloud data using the scan matching algorithm. The point cloud data thus obtained is processed with special algorithms to obtain the 3D model of the road surface scanned. This precise 3D model of the road surface obtained can be used for virtual simulation of the vehicle performance. The laser scanning system built helped to create the 3D road surface model from actual road. The algorithms recognize and build the basic features while for the other features, NURBS have been implemented to create the surface model. This surface model created can also be exported to other 3D data formats including the one required by the simulation softwares to test performance of vehicle on the road. In the near future we will use GPS along with this scanner system that will allow us to add the terrain elevations to the track 3D model and build a complete 3D model of the track.
