Rehabilitation and heightening (lifting) of asphaltic concrete surfaced dams and reservoirs
Dams all over the world require some form of sealing. One possibility is to seal dams with a bituminous surface liner. In nearly all cases an appropriately design asphaltic concrete has significant advantageous properties over conventional sealing materials. However the challenge is to lay the asphalt lining on steep and sometimes very long slope. To undertake such work requires specialist machinery, skilled personal and considerable experience. Eventually, as with all structures, the materials used to construct the structure will require maintenance, this includes the asphalt lining. Typically, asphaltic concrete will perform very satisfactory for more than 30 years, after such a time the asphaltic concrete may require some form of rehabilitation. Due to the layer composition of the asphalt lining, the rehabilitation can be contained to only the areas and layer that are damaged and require repair. Even the lifting of an existing dam to increase its height is easy to undertake, with the new part of the liner system being attached to the existing liner, even if the dam or reservoir have been in use for many years.
