Benefits to using silicone hybrids for improvements to wood coatings
The life expectancy of a wood is reduced by degradation due to sunlight accompanied by water and biological attack. However, the use of exterior durable stains and paints aid in the protection of wood. The addition of a silicone hybrid-based emulsion in paints or stains increases the durability of the coating which further extends the protection of the cellulosic-based substrate. Using homogeneous distribution of fine particle silicone organic hybrid technology increases the durability of acrylic, alkyd, or alkyd acrylic resin-based coatings. This article demonstrates the benefits achieved when utilizing compatible silicone hybrid resin technology in formulations designed for the protection of cellulosic-based substrates. The small particle size and composition of the silicone hybrid boost the performance of an acrylic-based stain formulation. The silicone hybrid is also very compatible and improves alkyds or alkyd acrylic resin-based formulations. The silicone hybrid protects wood from water, UV, and degradation, and decreases the consumers' work load by reducing the maintenance of their wood deck, furniture, and/or siding to increase the life of the cellulose-based material. The benefit of the silicone hybrid is not limited to wood stains, but includes paint as well. The silicone hybrid is very compatible and easily blends with heavily pigmented systems. Overall, the silicone hybrid is a new technology avenue that opens up new synthesis methods. These methods over time can be used to build a stronger resin system for the architectural coating market.
