The Use of Encapsulated Sand Elements for Beach Protection
For the severe erosion that is happening at the coast near Lido, Sete in the South of France a new submerged breakwater has been installed. This breakwater has been constructed with making use of sand encapsulated elements. These elements have a large diameter, 5 meter and are filled with sand under the waterline with a height of 3 meter. This has never been done on a Project in the world on such a scale! Next to an environmental friendly solution this has been proven as a hard armour solution, although it is still a soft structure for the bathing people. This is a strong argument for applying these kinds of elements and nowadays every designer can make a proper design with these elements. The state of the art design rules are published in booklet "Geosystems, design rules and applications". Due to the use of local available sand materials, high savings can be achieved in the carbon footprint calculations, the solution can be presented as a low carbon footprint erosion control measurement.
