Expansion of Landfill Capacity by Reinforced Waste Embankment - The Italian Experience
Landfill sites can run out of their designed capacity or airspace prematurely due to unanticipated population growth or through responding to debris waste from natural disaster. In such cases the vertical expansion of the landfill is a proven, viable and cost effective alternative to increase the landfill capacity. Techniques of vertical expansion are commonly used worldwide. In this paper, the focus is the vertical expansion of a landfill by using waste material to construct a reinforced waste embankment along the landfill periphery and thereby maximizing the landfill capacity. Certain design criteria and analyses that need to be verified include: embankment stability, landfill base settlement, integrity of the bottom liner system and leachate header pipe, final cover system veneer stability, leachate and landfill gas collection and management systems, erosion and sediment controls, and stormwater management.
