Rolled Erosion Control Mat (RECP) and Vegetation Protection Properties in a Rain-splash Test
A bench scale rain-splash induced slope soil erosion test was conducted according to the ASTM D7101 test method with some modifications for two types of rolled erosion control products. The test soil is sandy silt obtained from a local river bed, compacted in test soil containers. The test conditions included bare soil, RECP protected soil, vegetation protected soil, vegetation with RECP protected soil, hydro-seeded vegetation protected soil and hydro-seeded vegetation with RECP protected soil conditions. Bahia grass was chosen for this study with growth duration of 8 weeks. Test soil containers were placed on a 36° inclined slope ramp. The test rainfall intensity was 100 mm/hr. The quantity of soil loss was measured and the bench-scale cover index (BSCI) determined for each test condition. The study results indicated that RECP and vegetation are important influence factors for soil loss rates.
