Integrated Geosynthetic for Roadway Construction over a Peat Deposit
Approximately 130 m of roadway over a peat deposit extending to 3.7 m below grade, underlain by soft to medium stiff clay to 6.1 m as part of an Ohio Department of Transportation roadway replacement project. Pavement had been experiencing uneven settlement, both laterally and longitudinally over the past many years requiring continual maintenance work. ODOT estimated settlement up to 25 mm per year in various locations, as well as freeze/thaw issues. After reviewing several options, including Expanded Polystyrene geofoam and removal and replacement of the peat, a design was prepared utilizing an integrated geosynthetic incorporating the performance characteristics of both geogrid and geotextile. The design includes settlement calculations and an analysis to estimate the factor of safety against subgrade lateral squeeze. The final design was comprised of two (2) layers of the integrated geosynthetic placed at 305 mm vertical spacing within 610 mm of 75 mm minus crushed limestone aggregate.
