High Belite cements - Present status and future technological options: Part I
Interest in high-Belite cements, perhaps, owes its origin to the scientists' early expectation of saving energy in their manufacture. But as the experimental studies gradually revealed that the conventional approaches of making high-Belite cements may not lead to conservation of energy, there was an apparent waning in the active pursuit of this research. In recent years, there has been a revival of interest due to labscale successes of synthesizing reactive Belites at low temperatures through non-traditional approaches like sol-gel processing, hydrothermal treatment, etc. Further, the real value of the reactive Belite cements has also been seen to be their durability and not only the energy-saving potential. In the context of these conceptual changes, an attempt has been made here to review the status of development of high-Belite cements, share some of the Indian experiences and results, and draw up a picture of the future potential of this class of binder.
