Mineral flame retardants already represent the most important group of fire protection chemicals on a global basis. Because of their advantages in terms of toxicological and environmental aspects inorganic materials like ATH, magnesium hydroxides, zinc borate etc. will further outpace more traditional compounds based on halogenated materials. Especially for Western Europe, the public discussion and awareness for environmental concerns will favour these materials in specialities markets. Disadvantages like necessary high filling levels can be overcome by sophisticated technical solutions. So, in future it might become even more common to find more than 50 % of mineral flame retardants in a plastics product leaving only a minority share for the 'real' polymer part.
