Rheology of fresh concrete: principles, measurement, and applications
This paper presents a summary of the rheological properties of fresh concretes. First, certain aspects of cement paste are discussed with respect to the time dependence of the properties of cementitious mixtures. The Bingham model, which best represents the behaviour of fresh concrete, is presented. The measurement techniques for viscosity and yield stress that define the Bingham model are then presented with some observations regarding the use of coaxial cylinder viscometers and rheometers. The effects of mix composition on rheological properties are also discussed with an emphasis on the influence of these properties on concrete technology. Finally, the rheology of some special concretes (e.g. high-performance concrete and self-leveling concrete), and the relationships between rheological properties and several placing methods, including vibration, pumping, and shooting, are discussed.
