Smoke and mirrors: A fiber optic smoke sensor
Fiber optic smoke sensors have been built and demonstrated to function properly both in a laboratory smoke chamber and on the ex-USS SHADWELL. New design based on the scattering and wavelength shift of the absorptium spectrum offer performance improvements in the areas of smaller size, greater information availability (continuous measurement as opposed to threshold detection), and reduced false alarms due to dirt and water coatings on the sensing surface. Cost of fiber optic smoke sensors are much higher than the presently used ionisation chambers; cost should be reduced with the use of multiplexing, integrated optics, and standardised opto-electronic packages. Fiber optic smoke sensors offer advantages in the areas of reduced electromagnetic interference, reduced false alarms, and providing more information than conventional smoke detectors. Both scattering and spectrometric smoke sensors are described. A possible application of the smoke sensors is the continuously monitoring of smoke concentration on ships.
