Communications for the future (water authority SCADA system)
The Severn Trent Water Authority is responsible for clean water treatment and supply, dirty water treatment, and with reclamation of natural water courses and river management. Over 5000 operational sites are involved in this process. It is therefore essential, if these objectives are to be met with maximum efficiency, that there be extensive use of SCADA systems. Current system strategy includes the adoption of proven control and automation techniques using equipment of known performance. Centrally directed, locally controlled automatic control is a key element in this strategy, as is the provision of local control loops. The article concerns the application of local intelligence and of communication techniques to overcome problems such as the collection and transmission of excessive amounts of data and communication failure.
