Satellite communications provides a valuable tool for man against Mother Nature in the fighting of forest fires. Last summer Northern Idaho suffered through one of the worst dry spells in 80 years. The result was a number of forest fires. Always a dangerous and isolated job, fighting those fires became a bit more civilized thanks to satellite communications technology. Smaller satellite equipment provided fire fighting teams with advanced telecommunications capability which far out-stripped the two-way radio days of the past.
