The article describes the need for distributed intelligence in the water and waste treatment industry, and gives examples of its use. It then shows how experience gained in France may be applied in the UK when the latter's water industry is privatised. A system for detecting contamination by coagulates is discussed, and other water quality testing measures are more briefly discussed. Communications in this very much scattered industry are then considered. BT leased lines have been used, but the use of fixed scanning radio is recommended. Systems using very low power and very low transmission rates (1 mW, 1 bit per seven seconds) have proven adequate for some purposes. Finally, flow measurement is considered.
