The effects of vibration on large structures and determination of dynamic characteristics
The paper sets out the needs for full-scale dynamic testing and discusses the load/structure/response for large structures. Types of vibration tests are outlined in order to provide an insight into the integrity of the whole structures. Details of levels of vibration producing damage in structures are briefly discussed and observations on serviceability made. Data obtained on a ten storey reinforced concrete building shows how dynamic tests give information on an unexpected structural response. The study of vibrations on the reportedly oldest standing concrete bridge in the country showed how it performed relative to traffic and pile driving induced vibration.
