Study of the water distribution in brick-mortar combinations using neutron radiography
Waterflow from mortar to brick determines largely the time-dependence of the water distribution over the cross-section of a joint and its vicinal bricks. In particular data on the water distribution in the joint are of importance for the evaluation of the water binder ratio and consequently the hardening conditions of the binder. By means of a non-destructive method using thermal neutrons quantitative results on water content and water distribution in brick-mortar combinations are obtained. The method allows continuous measuring with a spatial resolution of 1 mm. We present results on a test series in which we have studied the influence of the brick suction by varying the porosity and initial water content, and the effects of variations in mortar composition on the water distribution in brick-mortar couplets. The effect of drying on the water distribution over the cross-section of the combinations will be shown. Finally, the interpretation of the test results with respect to bond will be discussed.
