Advanced composites in the construction industry
This paper presents a brief introduction and overview of the development and current uses of fiber reinforced plastics for civil engineering structures and structural members in the United States; including cables, highway lighting poles, reinforcing bars for concrete and for building construction. The paper also covers ongoing structural FRP research that is being conducted at several universities, on concrete reinforcement, pultruded structural shapes, and on a modular, totally fiberglass, bridge deck. The paper also presents some suggestions for developments and future applications o fiber reinforced plastic composites.
