Performance of shaking table tests and measurement of shear wave velocities in a centrifuge
The applicability of the similarity law for the shaking table test is discussed based on the comparison between the response of a dry sand layer of the small-size centrifuge model test and that of the large-size 1-g field shaking table test. The magnification characteristic in the centrifugal field is found to show the favorable correspondence with that in the 1-g experiment. A method of measuring the shear wave velocities of sand in a centrifuge is also presented. All the measured waveforms show good agreement with what have been predicted from the theory of elastodynamics. The shear wave velocities show strong dependency on the confining pressure.
