Seismic response of rigid tilting walls
The tilting behavior of a rigid gravity retaining wall during earthquake ground shaking was modeled on the centrifuge at Cambridge University in England using the 'Bumpy Road' actuator. An innovative design was used for the model wall. The backfill material was a dry Leighton-Buzzard 14/25 sand. Among the important results are the phasing of the soil-wall force relative to the direction of the horizontal ground accelerations and the rotation of the wall. Maximum earth forces occurred when the wall was rotated back against the backfill. Permanent wall rotations and increases in earth pressure after shaking were observed.
