Modelling of dynamic soil structure interaction resulting from impulsive surface loading
A series of centrifuge model tests was conducted to investigate the soil structure interaction of buried structures subjected to surface impulse loading. Brass cylinders were located in either dry or saturated sand and loaded with an impulse provided by a mass impacting on a target at the soil surface. Pressure cells were placed adjacent to the structure to measure the dynamic soil stress. The structural response was monitored using strain gauges. Other pressure cells monitored the attenuation of the p-wave as it travelled through the soil. The apparatus and instrumentation are described and the results of the model tests presented. These are compared with analyses to predict stress attenuation and the dynamic magnification factor of the soil/structure system.
