This paper presents a general dynamic compliance technique to determine the nonlinear time and frequency domain dynamic response of structures involving Coulomb friction damping. The stick-slip effects have also been addressed. Two numerical case studies have been discussed. One involves frictionally damped three-degree-of-freedom spring-mass-damper system. The time-domain response predicted from the dynamic compliance approach has been validated by directly solving the nonlinear system equations of motion. The second numerical case study considers a continuous simply-supported beam with a friction damper. The frequency-domain dynamic response and energy dissipation of the friction damper have been investigated. The approach outlined in the paper may be applied to study more complex structures with integrated Coulomb friction damping.
