Design of a spring loaded four-bar mechanism vor counterbalancing
In this project, a four-bar linkage was designed to be used as a counterbalance mechanism. By using a linear torsional spring as an input, the four-bar was designed to transform this into a constant torque output. Using energy methods, the necessary input-output displacement function which the linkage needed to approximate was determined. The dimensional synthesis of the linkage was subsequently completed using fourth-order curvature theory. The mechanism was then fabricated using a CAD/CAM package and a CNC milling machine for rapid prototyping. After fabrication, the design was tested and successfully provided a roughly constant torque over a long range of motion.
