Basis for a test facility for combustor burn-through fire protection shield
A combustor burn-through can give rise to an underexpanded, sonic or supersonic jet of gases and flames. The pressure and temperature in the jet may be as high as the highest values of pressure and temperature of the combustor operation. In order to protect the engine and aircraft components from continuous exposure to the jet over a period of time (generally several minutes) a fire shield is installed adjoining the combustor. The objective of the current study is to establish a preliminary design and testing procedure for such fire shield materials. A study has been undertaken on the nature of the mechanical and thermal loads that arise on the shield due to the impact of hot, high pressure, high speed jets. The results obtained assist in the determination of the essential features of the test facility, test plans and procedures required for proper testing of combustor fire shields.
