Finite element model updating of lightly damped structures using complex modes
A new method for the updating of finite element models using experimentally measured complex modes is presented. The updating involves a two step process; first an iterative step expands the experimental modes and corrects the mass and stiffness matrices, followed by a damping correction step. Instead of altering numerical entries in the finite element matrices, the physical meaning of the update is preserved by correcting design parameters within a user defined model. The correction system is usually built at the element level using sensitivity matrices. It is demonstrated that the method provides reasonable results for lightly damped structures. Results are provided from two numerical test problems. Numerical conditioning can be used to improve the quality of the update.
