Structural damage identification algorithms which use the information of the change of natural frequencies and mode shapes is proposed. The primary objective of the study is to reduce the number of sensors in order to provide an economical and reliable damage detection method for common civil structures. First, chages of the natural frequencies and the amplitude ratios of components in each mode shape are identified in frequency domain using the Fast Fourier transform. Then, the location and the magnitude of the variation of stiffness in each element are identified by solving the sensitivity relations of modes inversely. Numerical examples with simple structural systems show that the proposed methods can accurately detect the variations in stiffness in certain cases.
