Corrosion resistance of polyester and vinyl ester in continuous contact with concrete
The use of composites for strengthening concrete in construction is gaining acceptance; reinforcing members made of steel have been the material of choice for about a hundred years. However, steel reinforcing bars (rebars) in applications where they are in contact with salt can fail within a few years. On roads and bridges, where rebar and dowel bars are used, deicing salts permeate the concrete and cause permeate failure in less than seven years. Data included in this paper show that polyester and vinyl ester composites, using glass fibres, can hold up to the corrosive nature of continuous contact with concrete. These data cover two years of exposure to composite coupons made from corrosion grade isophthalic acid polyesters (isopolyester resins) and one set of composite coupons made of a bisphenol-A vinyl ester resin. The three composite systems retained most of their original strength, stiffness and surface hardness. The isopolyester resin based on neopentyl glycol had the higher overall retention of properties. All resins performed at a statisfactory level.
