Quantitative risk assessment: hydrocarbon refrigerants
In this paper, the technique of quantitative risk assessment (QRA) is discussed with respect to its application to flammable refrigerants, specifically hydrocarbons existing risk assessments published since 1991 are reviewed. Details are also presented on the approach of using background risks as a basis for comparison of calculated frequencies of fires and fatalities in respect to the use of flammable refrigerants, and contrasted to actual performance of a hydrocarbon charged freezer in a fire situation. Finally, a number of independet risk assessments commissioned by Calor Gas for a variety of different applications are described. The conclusions of all QRA evaluation are that the use of hydrocarbon refrigerants does not significantly increase the potential for fires or fatalities.
