Intumescent resin system for improving fire resistance of composites
A new water-soluble and water-dilutable thermoset resin system has been developed for improving fire resistance of fibrous and non-fibrous (wood) composites. This intumescent resin system was evaluated by OSU heat release rates and NBS smoke optical density for aerospace-type epoxy/glass and phenolic/glass composites. For wood composites such as fiberboard and oriented strand board, the intumescent system was mixed with expandable graphite flake. The coated wood composites were evaluated for flame spread index and smoke by E-84 Tunnel Test. The development continues to determine suitability of the intumescent system for other composites made with vinylesters and polyester resins.
