Stability analyses of underground openings using a multiaxial failure criterion
The induced stress state around underground excavations in rock is three-dimensional. Accordingly, stability analyses should be based on a multiaxial failure criterion. Recently, the authors have introduced a general failure surface that relies on specific fracture mechanisms for tensile and/or compressive stress states. In this paper, this new criterion is presented. It is then shown how it can be applied to evaluate the stability of underground openings. As a specific example, the case of boreholes in a high stress field in homogeneous and isotropic rocks is analyzed to estimate the major principal stress.
