Water conservation, recycling and reuse in Tata Steel
Rapid industrialization tends to create pollution of water streams. With the enactment of the prevention and control of water pollution act in India (1974), permission to discharge waste water was subject to very specific and in retrospect, still very strict conditions. At the same time, various developmental and irrigational projects have created tremendous pressure on fresh water sources, which are historically the main source of water for steel plants in India. Despite the high standards and poor availability, introduction of industry norm and tight penal cess rates for discharge of waste water have necessitated development of a multi-pronged water management approach in steel industry to improve water usage. The experience of Tata Steel is discussed with regard to water conservation, recycle and reuse.
