Measurement and interpretation of dynamic loads on bridges Phase 4 - Fatigue behaviour of steel bridges
The present report contains the results of the research activities carried out by the Italian group within the collective programme on the fatigue strength of steel bridges, fourth phase of the general research programme 'Measurement and interpretation of dynamic loads on bridges', promoted and financed by the ECSC. Six laboratories in European countries, previously listed, participated together with the Instituto di Scienza delie Costruzioni di Pisa. The research undertaken by the Italian group completed the information obtained during the third phase on the fatigue strength of orthotropic steel bridge decks (especially the connections between longitudinal stiffeners and transverse beams) and the development of repair techniques for fatigue-cracked or damaged stiffener-to-stiffener connections as well as for stiffener-to-transverse beam connections. Concerning stiffener-to-stiffener connections, two kinds of repair techniques, named R1 and R2, are proposed: R1 repair consists in replacing the damaged connection, while in R2 repair the cracks are ground and re-welded and the connection is reinforced through welded coverplates. Preliminary tensile fatigue tests performed on real scale specimens validated the R2 repair technique. The repair technique proposed for stiffener-to-transverse beam connections consists in grinding and re-welding the cracks. In order to define their fatigue strength, real scale specimens of repaired stiffener-to-stiffener connections and of virgin and repaired stiffener-to-transverse beam conncections have been tested under constant amplitude fatigue loads. Fatigue tests have been carried out on 10 tensile specimens, 13 repaired stiffener-to-stiffener connections, 4 virgin stiffener-to-transverse beam connections and 4 repaired stiffener-to-transverse beam connections, so that the total number of full scale specimens tested in Pisa is equal to 31. The test results allow us to draw relevant conclusions concerning the fatigue performance of the different types of details which have been studied. Beside that, a wide FEM parametric study has been performed in order to compare the stress patterns at the free edge in eleven different shapes of cut outs in the stiffener-to-transverse beam connections.
