Phase jump due to partial reflection of irregular water waves at steep slopes
The process of wave breaking at steep slopes is inextricably linked with the simultaneous formation of a reflected wave and a transmit-ted wave pulse corresponding to run-up. According to the law of conservation of momentum the water level deflection of the reflected wave must be negative, while the transmitted run-up is positive. Superimposition of incident and reflected waves results in the formation of a partial clapotis comprising of an imperfect node at the slope face, which is an indicator of a phase jump.
