A Machine View of the City
In his collection of essays Distant Reading , the literary theorist Franco Moretti ventured an application of statistical techniques to map structural relationships among a vast universe of European novels. Like an evolutionary biologist arranging specimens in phylogenetic trees, Moretti saw language as having specific forms that data could arrange into metamaps of the whole of literature. Moretti's distant reading and phylogenetic maps offer a way to escape this subjectivity and organise architecture's morphodiversity more objectively. The shape of a single building could be framed against for shapes of all others, related and situated holistically. This aspiration only really became feasible with machine learning (ML) and the vast digitisation of building data over the last two decades. Through a morphological ML, we enter a cartography drawn in data, of a purely relational portrait of buildings as the raw material of the architectural imagination.
