Assessment by code checking
The structural design of every building structure – indeed every steel structure – has to be assessed against all the requirements demanded by society. In many countries this is enforced by law. The requirements are laid down in the Eurocodes, which can be used to check the resistance (strength) of cross‐sections and joints and the stability of members. It must also be demonstrated that the steel structure has sufficient stiffness. In this chapter attention is paid to the following code‐checking topics:standards (codes) and guidelines for steel structures; Eurocode 3 for steel structures (EN 1993); assessment procedure; modelling for analysis; structural analysis; force distribution and deformation; design of cross‐sections and members, design of joints.
