Determination of Load and Resistance Factors by Methods of Moment
The load and resistance factors are determined using an acceptable reliability analysis method, such as first‐order reliability‐method (FORM) and Monte Carlo simulation. This chapter first reviews the basic principle of the load and resistance factor, and then discusses the principle for the determination of these factors using methods of moment. It introduces methods for the load and resistance factors estimation using the first few moments of the basic random variables, adopting simple formulae for the target mean resistance to avoid iterative computations. Although the load and resistance factors obtained using the third‐moment method are different from those obtained using FORM, the designed resistances under specific design conditions of the third‐moment method are quite close to those of FORM. The results of the load and resistance factors and the target mean resistances have good agreements for the third‐ and fourth‐moment methods.
