Nonlinear Architecture (1997)
This chapter presents two essays on nonlinear architecture written by Charles Jencks. The unpredictability of nonlinear, self‐organising natural systems is as much a matter of ideology and belief as it is a matter of fact, and the undecidability of some system developments can be interpreted metaphorically or as an inevitable law of nature. Jencks is keen to remark that the apparently animated behaviour of matter is in such cases ‘lifelike’, i.e., only an interpretive simile, and a similar metaphorical approach underpins his definition of ‘nonlinear architecture. Jencks reviews several ‘nonlinear’ buildings, recently built or still being built at the time, including Gehry's Guggenheim Bilbao and Foreign Office Architects’ (FOA's) Yokohama Port Terminal, now considered icons of the digital age. Jencks further talks about cinematic sectioning, fractal landforms and fluid fractals.
