Statistical Analysis of Failures of Landslide Dams
Landslide dams form most frequently where narrow steep valleys are bordered by high rugged mountains. The formation of most landslide dams was trigged by earthquakes and rainfall. Earthquake is the most important cause, inducing 48.2% of the landslide dams, among which 257 cases were caused by the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake. Rainfall is the second most likely cause, which accounts for 43.4% of the landslide dams. Of the 1267 landslide dams in the database, 101 remain stable against water erosion. The ability to evaluate the stability of a landslide dam has increased significantly in the past decade. Rational analysis based on mechanics can be routinely conducted. Without channelized spillways, landslide dams commonly fail by overtopping. Despite a large number of landslide dams with seepage problems, internal erosion failure is uncommon, while a large percentage of man‐made earth and rockfill dams failed in this mode.
