EXPANSIVE‐SOIL EFFECT ON BURIED PIPE
Over wide areas of the US, the soil is of such a nature that, during the course of a year, considerable swelling and shrinking take place within it. The effect that such soil can have upon embedded water pipe is obvious. The author, after running through a glossary of various types of so‐called expansive soils, describes a method for determining their swell index, thereby enabling one to design the most appropriate pipe for emplacement.
