Stresses in Saddle‐Supported Ductile‐Iron Pipe
A study of stresses induced in ductile‐iron pipe by saddle supports is described in this article. Experimental data on strain were used to determine the distribution of stress in the vicinity of the saddle. Results indicate that the optimum saddle angle is in the range of 90–120 degrees. The maximum localized stress for pipe with R/t values ≥ 28 can be approximated by the formula σ = k (P/t2) In (R/t), where k = 0.03 ‐ 0.00017 (β ‐ 90) and β is the saddle angle in degrees.
