SOILS INVESTIGATIONS: BY WHOM, HOW MUCH, WHEN, AND WHAT?
The following three articles deal with various aspects of the physical—as opposed to the fiscal—foundation of water‐plant construction. They were originally presented at the Annual Conference on Jun. 15,1971.
The main thrust of the lead article is that boring methods for obtaining soil samples have improved, but they still have their limitations. An alternate procedure is suggested that utilizes engineering soil maps when subsurface data are needed for relatively large areas.
The second of the trio relates some of the experiences—both good and bad—in the St. Louis area during the past twenty years regarding subgrade problems and their solutions.
In the final article, the author (a contractor) contends that his ilk is being left in the dark with respect to information about soil conditions in areas where it is important to excavate—to the disadvantage of all parties involved.
