Interim Measures Towards Sustainable Drainage in the Informal Settlements of South Africa
Local authorities in South Africa are incapacitated by a funding allocation that prioritises formal housing over the immediate needs in informal settlements. This chapter explores various options and processes that were implemented in a selected settlement over a period of almost ten years. It considers a unique case because of the dearth of experience and knowledge to date towards the realisation of an incremental upgrade of informal settlement in the country. This study examines two approaches that were used in an effort to intervene and contribute to the general upgrading of drainage in Langrug. The first involved a research project undertaken by the University of Cape Town's Urban Water Management research unit in a study that was funded by the South African Water Research Commission, and the second involved an ongoing intervention by the local authority and the Western Cape provincial government, together with the facilitation and support services of a non‐government organisation (NGO).
