Multiple Benefits of Green Infrastructure
This chapter discusses many aspects of green infrastructure (GI), including that of water management. This is essential in considering water resource issues in the built environment as urban settings are complex and often space‐limited with multiple users and stakeholders. Thus, whilst GI can address aspects of water management, it must also deliver multiple benefits. Ecosystem functions of GI include water management through the provision of sustainable urban drainage systems (SUDS), which manage water quality, quantity and provide amenity; enhanced flood alleviation; local climatic amelioration; improved air quality; providing conditions for urban biodiversity; provision of green space for public uses; and associated increased health and well‐being benefits. Current policy and legislative drivers support the implementation of GI in new developments and in the redevelopment of already developed areas.
