Basic Modeling Considerations
Building information modeling (BIM) objects are created by generating solid models that represent various components assemblies and products. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) assigns a level of development (LOD) for each project phase. Representative modeling is a concept that allows us to simplify graphics to represent multiple products using a single object. Different BIM platforms have different methods of creating the solids that represent the objects we use in the project. Developing solid geometry is a series of exercises in creating sketches that are dimensioned and in many cases controlled by parameters. One main purpose in using reference planes to dimension sketches is so the reference plane may be used to align or lock the geometry to adjacent solids. Interference checking or "clash detection" is a function of BIM software that allows it to analyze two or more components to see whether they interfere with one another in the model.
