Chlorinated and Brominated Compounds Are Not Equal
The Environmental Protection Agency is in the process of establishing a maximum contaminant level (MCL) for trihalomethanes. This organic group, containing chloroform, bromoform, and other halogenated methanes, has been classified as a suspected carcinogenic based on the results of experiments utilizing large doses of chloroform on laboratory animals. The proposed MCL is scheduled for publication in the Federal Register with promulgation following within six months.
