Colloid Destabilization With Cationic Polyelectrolytes as Affected by Velocity Gradients
Cationic polyelectrolytes can effectively destabilize colloidal and particulate matter without the use of inorganic salts by one's applying increased mixing energy to rapid‐mix basins. A comparison of the sludges produced by polyelectrolytes and inorganic coagulants indicates that polymer sludge has a greater density, more rapid settling, improved dewatering characteristics, and significantly lower volume. Because of this and the increased ease of handling, cationic polyelectrolytes provide the advantage of lower overall treatment costs.
