Quantitative Fractography
This chapter provides a background to fracture mechanics. Fracture origins in a material can be found by examining the fracture surface and tracing the characteristic markings back to the point from which they emanated. The characteristic markings on the fracture surface can be used to determine the strength of a fractured part and to identify the cause of the failure. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) is very valuable for emphasizing certain fracture surface features, especially those with varying depths of field. Linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM) equations can be used to characterize the stress and crack size needed for initiation of crack propagation. After the crack starts to propagate, there are three regions of crack growth known as mirror, mist, and hackle. Quantitative fractography utilizes the features on the fracture surfaces by measuring the transitions between the start of crack propagation and the transitions of these characteristic regions.
